JOHOR BARU: Five players from the team that finished third last year will spearhead Great Britain’s challenge in the 2023 Sultan of Johor Cup at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium. They are Lewis Wilcher, Rory Penrose, Tom Moorhouse, Max Anderson, and Elis Robson. The team once again will be coached by England’s Jon Belby. Britain made their debut in the SOJC in 2013 and have won the title three times in 2015, 2018, and 2019. This will be their ninth appearance in the SOJC.

Earlier this year, as England, they failed to get past the European Junior Championship and will not feature in the December Junior World Cup. The Great Britain team is made up of players from the England and Scotland squads. At the European championships, six of the players represented England while two played for Scotland. The England players are Nick Nurse, Rory Penrose, Tom Moorhouse, Lewis Wilcher, Jacob Payton, and Elis Robson. Mathew Hughson and Ali Douglas were in the Scotland side.

Both Britain and India have three titles each and will be eyeing a fourth in the 11th edition of the SOJC. Britain is placed in Group A with Germany, Australia, and South Africa. They will start their campaign against Australia on Oct 27.
