Great Britain is optimistic about defending their title at the 2025 13th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup (SOJC), set to begin at the Johor Hockey Stadium, Taman Daya, tomorrow.

However, head coach Jon Bleby maintains full respect for all participating teams, each bringing their own reputation and strengths in the battle for the championship.

“We come here with confidence. I believe we have a good team. Every year is unpredictable. This tournament provides a great challenge. We expect every team to give tough competition, said Bleby. “Honestly, the chances are even, but we are optimistic. We want to win this tournament, so we will do everything possible to try and win it again.”

“We brought our strongest squad here. There may be a few changes, but many of these players will also go on to play in the World Cup,” he said after a friendly against the Johor SUKMA squad on Wednesday, October 8.

The British team is the most successful side, having won the trophy in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2024. They are looking to retain their title and win the Sultan of Johor Cup for a fifth time.

The opening match between Great Britain and three-time champions India tomorrow is expected to draw a big crowd.

Though Great Britain won the coveted Sultan of Johor Cup for a record fourth time last year, the loudest cheers were reserved for Jon Bleby, who took them to their fourth title in six out of 10 editions. He was appointed GB Under-21 men’s team coach in 2013.

Bleby also highlighted several teams capable of challenging Great Britain’s title hopes, including Malaysia.

“One of the reasons we are proud of winning the SOJC four times is because it’s such a tough tournament. This is not a competition you can come and win easily. Every team here is strong. Australia is very tough, India is an excellent side, and Malaysia always give us a very hard match every year,” he said.

The 46-year-old coach also reminded his players to continue improving their performance ahead of the weekend’s competition.

“I told the players we need to start raising our level. These are great training matches for us to prepare for the tournament,” he added.

In the warm-up match, Great Britain defeated the Johor youth squad 2-1, as the latter continued their preparations for the 2026 Selangor SUKMA Games.
