The Malaysian junior hockey team is determined to raise its game intensity
against New Zealand as they chase their first win in the in 2025 Sultan of
Johor Cup (SOJC) at the Johor Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru today.
To realise their three-point dream, head coach Nor Saiful Zaini Nasiruddin
is working on a constructive strategy to derail New Zealand coach Mike
Delaney’s side.
After a 2–7 humiliation against Pakistan in the opening match and an
impressive comeback to hold Australia to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, the Young
Tigers are on a high and ready to give their best challenge against their
Kiwi opponents.
“Our main goal is to secure a win. Although we expect a tough challenge,
I’m confident the players are capable of matching them. The draw against
Australia has boosted the players’ morale. They played a more open but
structured game and managed to close down Australia’s attacking space,”
he said.
Ahead of the New Zealand clash, Nor Saiful said his team would fine-tune
their tactical approach — particularly in the final quarter, where players
often fall too deep into defence.
“The players must avoid giving opponents space to enter the D area,” he
added.
Nor Saiful also predicted a stern test as New Zealand are not an easy side to
beat despite losing their first two matches to Australia (0–4) and India
(2–4).
“Their tactical approach is quite similar to Australia’s, with plenty of
attacks coming from the flanks. What’s important is for our players to
minimise conceding penalty corners.
“I believe the players’ motivation is now at 100 percent, and we’ll ensure
they’re fully prepared both mentally and physically,” Nor Saiful stressed.
