Great Britain continued its dominance over Pakistan by securing a 3-2
victory to win the bronze medal in the 13 th Sultan of Johor Cup at the Johor
Hockey Stadium.
Pakistan trailed by two goals barely 12 minutes into the game. Kaden
Draysey opened the scoring in the seventh minute via a penalty corner
conversion, and Michael Royden extended the lead to 2-0 five minutes later.
Fast earning a reputation as ‘comeback kings’, Pakistan pulled one back
through captain Abdul Hannan Shahid from a field goal in the 23 rd minute
as the score stayed 2-1 till the end of third quarter.
The Green Shirts, who are known for their remarkable ability to resurge,
came back strongly in the 54 th minute to level the score at 2-2. Drag-flick
specialist Sufyan Khan’s well-calculated push sailed past goalkeeper Calum
Douglas.
As both teams raced against the clock in the closing minutes, Great Britain
and Pakistan were left with 10 players following yellow cards served to
Australian Tom Spreckley in the 54 th minute and Sufyan in the 57 th minute.
Henry Markham delivered the biggest blow to Pakistan and lifted Great
Britain’s chances of a bronze medal with a third goal three minutes to the
end. The Pakistanis went all out for the equaliser that never came.
In the round-robin match between the two teams on Oct 12, Great Britain
secured a 5-1 win.
